July 1976 in Pittsburgh

I found this previously unknown DA image yesterday while I was meandering around on the web. It was taken in July of 1976 in Pittsburgh's Three Rivers Stadium. The Phils played the Pirates in Pittsburgh during the day on July 3rd and a doubleheader on July 4th. Allen started at first and batted fifth in all three of those games.

Now that I look back on it, doesn't it seem strange MLB did not schedule a game on July 4th, 1976 in Philadelphia?

They did not play in Philly that year because of the hundreds of festivities that were planned in the city that day. Kind like the Blue Jays moving their series to Philly this year.

Thanks Anon

I guess that makes sense.

MLB made the Blue Jays move the games this year to Philly because of security concerns. I don't think that was as much of a factor in 1976. Also, I would have thought most of the events that year & day would have taken place in Center City, not in South Philly.

Imagine the marketing that MLB would roll out these days for such important holiday. It would be overwhelming.

They needed all the hotel space they could get. Very few hotels in Philly back in the day

Thanks, the hotel situation sounds logical.

The Phillies began a seven-game homestand with the Dodgers and Padres beginning Monday July 5th. The Monday game was televised by ABC (but blacked out in Philadelphia). That game drew 60,000 to the Vet. It was also fireworks night. No one seemed to make a big deal out of the fact that the Phillies were on the road July 4th. I also remember that the July 3 Saturday afternoon game was the NBC Game of the Week.

I do remember this Pittsburgh series. The Phillies took the series from the Bucs and took a pretty large lead in the standings; however, what I remember most is McCarver stroking a grand slam and getting called out for passing Garry Maddox on the basepaths at first base.....
