16 years ago tonight, Cal Ripken breaks Lou Gehrig's consecutive game record playing in his 2,131st straight game.
Ripken hits a home run off of Angels starter Shawn Boskie in the 4th inning as the Orioles beat the Angels 4-2. It was the third straight game Cal went deep.
When the game became official in the middle of the fifth inning, the new 'Iron Man' is pushed out of the dugout by his teammates and he takes a victory lap around Camden Yards during the 22-minute standing ovation from the sell-out crowd.
Ripken would continue playing for another 501 straight games over the next three years, setting his own record streak at 2,632 games. He waited until the final home game of the 1998 season before he voluntarily removed his name from the lineup.
