The ceremony will take place on September 3, 2020, the 57th anniversary of Allen’s major league debut with the Phillies. The organization will also honor Allen next season when fans will be in attendance and can properly salute his storied career.

“Dick Allen burst onto the 1964 Phillies and immediately established himself as a superstar. His legendary performance on the field gave millions of fans lasting memories, and he helped cement my love for baseball and the Phillies as a young boy,” said Middleton. “The Phillies organization is thrilled to give Dick and his family this honor that recognizes his Hall of Fame-worthy career and his legacy as one of the greatest Phillies of all time.”

Allen, 78, spent nine of his 15 major league seasons (1963-77) with the Phillies and won National League Rookie of the Year in 1964. During his time with the club, Allen batted .290 with 204 doubles, 204 home runs, 655 RBI, a .371 on-base percentage and a .530 slugging percentage (.902 OPS) in 1,070 games. His slugging percentage is second-best in Phillies history, behind only Hall of Famer Chuck Klein (.553), and he ranks 10th in home runs. Allen led his league in OPS four times in his career, including twice with the Phillies in 1966 (1.027) and 1967 (.970).

One of the premier sluggers of his era, Allen had the fifth-most home runs (319) among all major league players over an 11-year span (1964-74) behind four Hall of Famers: Hank Aaron (391), Harmon Killebrew (336), Willie Stargell (335) and Willie McCovey (327). Also during that time, his combined .940 OPS was second best, narrowly trailing Aaron (.941). Finally, over those 11 years, his cumulative WAR of 58.3 was tied for the sixth-highest among all players, including 37 Hall of Famers to play in that time span. Allen twice led the American League in home runs, including the 1972 season when he was named MVP after hitting .308 with 37 home runs, 113 RBI, 99 walks, a .420 on-base percentage and a 1.023 OPS. His only postseason appearance came in 1976, when he made three starts for the Phillies in the National League Championship Series.

A seven-time All-Star (1965-67; 1970; 1972-74), Allen played nearly every position on the field during his career but is widely known as a first and third baseman. In addition to his time with the Phillies (1963-69; 1975-76), he donned a major league uniform for the St. Louis Cardinals (1970), Los Angeles Dodgers (1971), Chicago White Sox (1972-74) and Oakland A’s (1977).

Allen became one of the all-time greats in Phillies history after being signed by the team in 1960 to his first professional contract. He joined the Phillies front office in 1994 as a fan representative and, later, a club ambassador.

Allen joins Hall of Famers Richie Ashburn (1), Jim Bunning (14), Mike Schmidt (20), Steve Carlton (32), Roy Halladay (34) and Robin Roberts (36) as the only Phillies in team history to have their numbers retired. Allen was inducted into the Phillies Wall of Fame in 1994.

REFLECTIONS ON DICK ALLEN’S CAREER

(Courtesy of Tollin Productions)

“[Dick] was a fine ball player. It has been a long time since I have posted anything here, but I wanted to celebrate some BIG NEWS!

Yesterday, our man Dick Allen was selected to the 2014 Golden Era Committee ballot for the National Baseball Hall of Fame. The is an important step and marks the first time his Hall of Fame credentials will actually be debated on a national level.

Huge props to our friend Mark "Frog" Carfagno for his relentless and passionate support for Dick. Without him, this day may have never come. If you have not already visited and "liked" the Facebook group DICK ALLEN BELONGS IN THE HALL OF FAME! -- you should do so.

The final step belongs to the 16-person Golden Era Committee, which consists of Hall of Famers Jim Bunning, Rod Carew, Pat Gillick, Ferguson Jenkins, Al Kaline, Joe Morgan, Ozzie Smith and Don Sutton; baseball executives Jim Frey, David Glass, Roland Hemond and Bob Watson; and veteran media members Steve Hirdt, Dick Kaegel, Phil Pepe and Tracy Ringolsby.

The Golden Era Committee will review and vote on the Hall of Fame candidates at the Winter Meetings in December. Dick needs at least 12 votes to be inducted.

I launched Dick Allen Hall of Fame here in February 2009, moving the project from a static HTML structure to a more interactive and easier to maintain blogging platform. 1,618 days and 851 posts later this place has provided me with an outlet to share my unending passion for baseball and a chance to meet a whole bunch of new friends. It has been a lot of fun and I would do it all over again.

Today, I am pleased (and saddened) to announce that this will be the last post for my Dick Allen Hall of Fame. I am not just walking away... I have been asked to help develop, launch and operate Dick Allen's new official website:

DickAllen15.com

The plan is for DA15 to be different from most every other famous athlete's website. Dick has a vision of a diverse community where friends and fans can come together to share stories and opinions on a wide range of topics. Obviously launching a compelling website doesn't happen overnight, but working with my childhood baseball hero is an opportunity of a lifetime and something I could not pass up.

I am neck-deep in the middle of the development & launch phase of DA15. Depending on how much time I have after we get rolling, I hope to continue to share my personal photography and other graphic creations at SeasonTicketPhotos.com. I will also be transitioning the DAHoF social media accounts to support the DA15 project or transfer them for my own personal use. I will leave the DAHoF archive and email on for the time being. Feel free to send me an email if you have any questions.

Thank you all for the generous support over the years.

I invite you to come on over and say hi to me DickAllen15.com

I shot 12 of the 14 games played in Omaha this year (missed the first two because of my parents 50th wedding anniversary). Snapped over 15,000 frames. Sent over 1,400 to various photo services. Here are 45 of my favorites.
Now this big event is over, I hope to get on a more regular posting schedule.Dick Allen Hall of Famehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13878225283080842633noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1414860005606501808.post-77607187543014330652013-06-23T17:11:00.002-05:002013-06-23T17:27:11.601-05:00CWS Rainbow CollectionIt has been a while since I have posted anything... 1) because the 2013 Philadelphia Phillies are a depressing team to watch and 2) I have been very busy at the College World Series in Omaha. If you follow DAHoF on Twitter or Facebook you have already seen some of the pictures I have been shooting.

Last night, after a couple of beers with friends somehow we started a discussion on the bold new fashion trends being made in college baseball. One of the remaining teams, Mississippi State actually has rainbow style uniforms, although I am told they will not wear them in a CWS game. As a long time fan of the Houston Astros 'tequila sunrise' uniforms I agreed to create a rainbow uniform for each of the eight teams that made it to Omaha this year.

I give you my 2013 CWS Rainbow collection:
At the risk of sounding like a old man... I stopped voting for the starters in the baseball All-Star Game years ago. There was something magical about punching out the chads on those old ballots that an online vote just couldn't match. As a result, I have been largely indifferent about the results of this league sanctioned popularity contest.

The emergence of Phillies outfielder Domonic Brown has made me start to pay attention this year. I believe his power production warrants his inclusion on the National League team. I was shocked today when I read the initial voting update from MLB... Dom Brown isn't even in the TOP 15 for National League Outfielders!

Yes, let me say that again... the NL Home Run leader and the current NL Player of the Month isn't in the top 15 for his position.
I have a couple of email addresses handy, so I should be able to put out a couple of dozen votes for him myself. I am asking all the readers of this blog to take the time to vote for Domonic Brown also. I won't cast all of my ballots right away AND as an incentive to have you join my fight... I am willing to trade YOUR vote for Dom for MY vote of your favorite player (as long as they don't play for the Mets).

Outside of the 4 games Cole Hamels pitched for the Threshers, Schmidt was handed a team with virtually no prospects and finished with a 55-81 record. He resigned at the end of the season.
Looking beyond the devastating injury to Roy Halladay and the disappearing bats every time Cole Hamel steps on the mound -- there is some good news wearing red pin stripes this summer: the emerging power stroke of Domonic Brown.

With yesterday's performance, Brown became the first player in baseball history to hit 10+ home runs and collect zero walks in a calendar month. For the record, Dom hit 12 bombs in May. My friends at Crashburn Alley combined all of them into one domonating GIF.

There are many titles used in the Navy. Some are official rank names, others are earned as you move up the ladder, while some are given based on your chosen occupation. Amongst all of the titles sailors and officers earn there is one that warrants the most bragging rights: plank owner.

Plank owner is the term given to a member of the ship’s original crew. The name stems from tradition that the original crew would have their names engraved into the wooden deck planking at the time of commissioning. When the ship was decommissioned, these Plank Owners would receive a part of this wooden deck. Today, while the decks may not be wooden, Navy ship crews still hold the title of plank owner in high esteem. To be a plank owner means you are part owner of the ship; you are part of its legacy.
Over time, other projects turned my attention away, as a result, it has been a long time since I have posted one. That all changed this morning after I discovered this superb minor league image of the great Dave Parker.

Here is a 22 year old "Cobra" as a member of 1973 AAA Charleston (WV) Charlies:

This 1973 Charleston team was managed by former Red Sox manager Joe Morgan and stacked with future major leaguers including Art Howe, Ed Ott, Bruce Kison and Frank Taveras. Interesting to note that Parker wasn't the most productive power hitter on the team, as the late Tony Solaita led the team in home-runs, RBIs, and OPS.Dick Allen Hall of Famehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13878225283080842633noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1414860005606501808.post-34877799340759620172013-05-27T14:13:00.000-05:002013-05-27T14:13:05.836-05:00Happy Memorial Day Harmon Bove, Jr.Harmon Bove Jr. was born on March 13, 1950 in Burlington, Vermont. He went to Burlington High School where he was an All-State football player and played baseball at a high enough level that in June of 1968 he was drafted by the Houston Astros in the 27th round of the MLB Amateur Draft.

Later that summer he started his profession baseball career as a backup catcher for the Covington Astros of the Rookie Appalachian League. One of his teammates was a future MLB all star named Cesar Cedeno. Bove appeared in 24 games, collecting 6 hits and 4 walks in 38 plate appearances.

After graduation, he also enlisted the Marine Corps. He told a friend he picked the Marines because someone told him that kids enlisting in the National Guard were "cowards". He went to Recruit Training at Parris Island, South Carolina where he was honored as top recruit/platoon guide. Within a few months he was headed to Vietnam, where his tour started on July 4, 1969.

On March 3, 1970, while out on patrol in Quang Nam Province, Corporal Bove stepped on a booby trap and suffered multiple fragmentation wounds. He was flown to a hospital in Da Nang, where he died the following day. He was nine days away from his 20th birthday.

Harmon Bove is buried at Lakeview Cemetery in Burlington. The cemetery is located alongside his high school’s baseball and football field. His headstone, made by the stonemasons in Burlington, resembles a bench in the dugout, with a baseball and glove etched into the stone.

Happy Memorial Day Corporal Bove. Semper Fi.
Original story from January 2013: CBSSports.com created an lineup of "the best players not in the Hall of Fame who have already had their cases evaluated by the BBWAA"
Here is the portion of the story I care about:

1B - Dick Allen; Phillies, Cardinals, Dodgers, White Sox, A's; 1963-77
Hall of Fame balloting history: Fell off after 14 years, peaked at 18.9 percent in 1996.
Allen was nothing if not a fount of controversy. A product of small-town Pennsylvania who was unaccustomed to outward displays of racial hostility, Allen was scarred by his experiences as the first black ballplayer in Civil Rights-era Little Rock and by the charged climate in Philadelphia during his rookie season of 1964. Those struggles don't explain away all of his misdeeds, but Allen's environment must be considered before you condemn him. His bat, though, was something to behold. Most impressive is that OPS+ of 156, which is good for 19th place on the all-time list. When finally paired with a manager who knew how to handle him (Chuck Tanner in 1972), Allen won the MVP.
Dick Allen Hall of Famehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13878225283080842633noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1414860005606501808.post-59592921004955002992013-05-18T15:40:00.002-05:002013-05-18T15:40:30.792-05:002013 - Game 42

He loves to play catcher and I love to watch him play. While I’m not a full time photog, I do work on the side and as a result I never attend a game without taking my gear with me.

Last year I happened on the idea of making baseball cards of the players using my photos. I gave these out to the kids at the end of the season and you would have thought that they had won the lottery; I’ve received lots of nice compliments about my work over the years, but NOTHING compared to seeing the glow and pride on their faces when they saw themselves printed out in a baseball card.

With that experience in mind, I’ve decided to make baseball cards again for this season to give to the kids. I searched the web for other baseball card ideas and that’s when I happened upon your website and found some of the templates that you have so kindly offered to share. I have used some of these so far and have attached them to this email to show you how well they have worked. (I’m at work and didn’t have access to the high-resolution files when I sent this email.) I’ve also attached a baseball card styled after an Upper Deck hockey trading card, but I don’t know what year style that this design is. I created this template from scratch last night and modeled it using a layers configuration that is typical in your own PSD files. I really like how you use Adjustment Fill Layers and Masks on your template designs. This makes customizing the cards to team colors much easier when making baseball player cards from other teams.

I thank you for your generosity and sincerely appreciate your willingness to share your PSD files.

I thank you for your time, and I sincerely look forward to hearing from you. Since I’ve discovered your blog, I visit often and enjoy reading your posts.

After we exchanged some emails and I got permission to show off these custom cards. I think they really look nice, especially the Panini/Donruss Legends version. Most of all, I appreciate the kind words. Let me know if you are interested in getting one of these templates, I can put you in touch with the creator.
