With yesterdays win, the Phillies are now exactly half-way done with the 2011 season. I wanted to mark this milestone with a 1680x1050 collage of all the "photo of the the game" images I have posted this season. Here is to hoping the second half of the season mirrors the first half.

Old Comiskey Park HomePlate Wallpaper
One thing I always do when I make it to a Chicago White Sox game is go across the street and visit the site of the old Comiskey Park. You can easily find the homeplate location by the marble marker across the street from US Cellular Field, right off the the sidewalk. The old foul-lines are painted into the parking lot and the walk-way structure behind home plate is curved much like the original structure.
A couple of years ago, I went to a game with a friend and snapped a close up image of the marker. I have a lot of great memories of that old ballpark.

1969 Letters in the Dirt: Colorize This!
A couple years ago I posted about Chuck Brodsky's Dick Allen tribute song "Letters in the Dirt". The timeless legend of the words "BOO", "COKE", and "Oct 2" remains part of mythology that accompanies Dick Allen even to this day. If you have never heard the song, treat yourself to a couple of minutes of our friend Chuck Brodsky.
<--- I am not sure what DA is writing in this picture. It looks to me like "GRAS". The problem is I have never read any story referring to a word with these letters involved. Anyone who can help me solve this mystery will be rewarded with a free 8x10 print of their choice from my personal collection.
Anyway, I recently found some nice clean images of DA scratching words into the dirt at Connie Mack Stadium. Today, while I was sitting on a boring "real work" conference call I decided to take another swing at colorizing a black and white image. I chose the infamous "Boo" image because it perfectly summarizes the 1969 Phillies season and Dick Allen's first tour of duty with the Phillies.
After I was done modifying the photo -- I thought the resulting image would make a great new unique computer wallpaper. Here is my 1280x800 version.
Let me know if there is any interest in a larger resolution.

Hey Phanatic, you need to charge in on those
Just a friendly reminder, when you attend a baseball game (even minor league games) AND you are not seated behind a screen, you need to pay attention... unless you are the guy in the "PITT FOOTBALL" shirt. In that case you need to dive in front of our beloved Phantic and take one in your face.

New DA photos
This morning I have added four new additions to the DAHOF photo store. All four of these images were taken at Chicago's Wrigley Field in June of 1975. You may recognize the third image, as it is one I have already colorized. If you are interested in getting a print larger than 8x10, please feel free to e-mail me directly. The clarity of these images is great and any of them would look great as a poster.

Uniform Redux: Newark Eagles
Moving forward with this project, next is the Newark Eagles.
From NegroLeagueBaseball.com:
The Newark Eagles club was born from the union of the Brooklyn Eagles and Newark Dodgers teams, both brought under the ownership of Newark businesman, Abe Manley, in 1936. During the club's 13-year stint in the Negro National League it's roster featured many of Negro League baseball's biggest stars, including Hall-Of-Famers Ray Dandridge, Willie Wells, Leon Day, Lary Doby, and Monte Irvin.
In 1946 the Eagles won the Negro World Series in a 7-game contest with the Kansas City Monarchs. It might be said, though, that the Eagle's club was victimized by it's own success during the late 1940s. After showcasing some of black baseball's finest talent during the late 1940s, Manley's roster became prime hunting grounds for major league baseball team owners after Branch Rickey broke organized baseball's "gentleman's agreement" with the signing of Jackie Robinson.
After losing Larry Doby to the Cleveland Indians and witnessing the departure of Monte Irvin to the New York Giants, Manley realized that the days of his club (and the Negro National League) were numbered. The team stopped operations in 1948.

1975 Reggie Jackson Topps Redux
One of the best things about this site is the people I get to hear from. I get all kinds of emails from all over the country and appreciate the great feedback (good or bad) that I get. A couple of days ago I got a nice email from a reader named Dave. He stumbled onto this site after visiting Dan Epstein and Big Hair/Plastic Grass. Ignoring the fact that he openly admited he is a "Mets fan", we got into a short email conversation about our common interests. In the course of that conversation, he spawned an idea for me.
From Dave:
I couldn't choose between the many cool images available, so instead of doing just one Reggie Jackson 1975 AL All-Star card, in true DAHOF fashion, I over-did it and made three. Which one is your favorite?
From Dave:
...this 1975 set has become sort of my "rosebud," if that makes any sense. I think your Dick Allen '75 "update card" of him on the Phils is great.
I was always annoyed that TOPPS messed up the REGGIE JACKSON card. He started the All-Star game just like Burroughs and Murcer. His card needs a Red/Yellow border with the AL ALL-Star OF just like Jeff Burroughs. Think you could make one of those?
Would love to see what that looks like.I have to be honest with you, up until this point I had never noticed every 1975 Topps "all star" card had the same red/yellow border color scheme. I had always just assumed that Topps used random color combinations for those guys just as they had for the entire set. I was shocked to learn that they actually had a uniform color scheme for those players with the "all-star star". I guess it is true, you really do learn something new everyday.

Latest eBay acquisition
Check out the scan of the latest Dick Allen photo in my collection. I purchase it on eBay from a wire photo collection being sold by the Allentown newspaper called The Morning Call. They have a bunch of images, but this one was the best in my opinion.
Of course I over-paid for a copy of an easily reproduced wire photo, but I rarely get to see new images of Dick Allen. I love this image because it clearly shows the 1976 Phillies Bicentennial patch. It is a strong candidate for a future "colorize this" project.
If you have any unique vintage Dick Allen images you would like to share, please feel free to drop me an email. I would love to trade or work something out with you.

New baseball hat template
I was playing around this weekend trying to re-create the simple hat template from the 1962 Chicago Cubs program posted on The Fleer Sticker Project in March. Here is the result.
The template allows you to control & change the colors of the crown, bill, button, and skin. Let me know if you are interested in getting the PSD (photoshop) file to play around with.

So much for the regular lineup... In the first inning, Jimmy Rollins fouled a pitch off his right knee and eventually had to leave the game. The Phillies dropped their fourth straight game and their all time record at PNC Park in Pittsburgh fell to 12-22. Photo by Justin K. Aller / Getty

Uniform Redux: Philadelphia Stars
This morning I woke up with an inspiration and idea for an updated Philadelphia Stars logo.
From the Negro Leagues Baseball eMuseum:
Organized by Ed Bolden in 1933, the Stars won a Negro National League flag in 1934, their first season in the league. After copping the second half title, the Stars defeated the Chicago American Giants in a bitterly contested 7-game championship series. One of the games in the playoff was protested by the Chicago American Giants, but the Stars' victory was upheld, and Philadelphia claimed the pennant. Unfortunately, this was to be their last flag, even though they remained in the league until its demise in 1948.
The nearest they came to another title were strong second half finishes in 1938 and 1944, with their front office claiming they were cheated out of the latter pennant. After the Negro National League folded, the Stars entered the Eastern Division of the Negro American League but without any appreciable success.

For the first time all season, the eight projected "regulars" were in the lineup at the same time. Cole Hamels pitched eight innings of one hit/one run baseball. However, the Phillies offense failed to provide enough run support and they lost to the Pirates in 12 innings. Photo by Justin K. Aller / Getty
